Convert miles per hour to kilometers per hour with the formula, an extended speed limit reference table, and real-world driving context. Runs client-side.
MPH to KPH converts imperial speed readings to the metric system used in most countries worldwide. Multiply the miles per hour value by 1.60934 to get kilometers per hour. This conversion is critical when driving internationally, reading foreign vehicle specs, or comparing speed data across regions.
kph = mph × 1.60934
Worked example: converting 65 mph (standard US interstate speed):
For a quick mental estimate, multiply by 1.6. This gets you within about 1 kph for typical driving speeds.

If you are driving in Europe and your US rental car shows mph, you need to convert every speed limit sign. A sign showing 130 means 80.8 mph. Driving at what you think is 70 mph puts you 10 mph under the limit. Converting prevents both speeding tickets and unnecessary slow driving.
US speed limits in mph are often close to round numbers in kph. 55 mph is 88.5 kph, close to 90 kph. 65 mph is 104.6 kph, close to 100 kph. Understanding the approximate equivalents helps you gauge limits mentally without converting every sign.
US car reviews list top speed in mph. A car with a 180 mph top speed goes 289.7 kph. If you are reading German or Japanese car forums, converting lets you compare performance figures directly.
A runner maintaining 8 mph is traveling at 12.9 kph. International running communities often discuss pace in min/km rather than min/mile. Converting your mph pace to kph helps you compare with global running data.
US weather reports give wind speed in mph. A 50 mph wind gust equals 80.5 kph. If you are reading international storm tracking data, converting helps you understand severity on a consistent scale.
US truck speed governors are often set to 65 or 75 mph. Converting to kph (104.6 or 120.7 kph) helps when operating vehicles across the US-Canada border or comparing international fleet specifications.
Multiplying by 0.621 converts kph to mph, not the other way. If you multiply mph by 0.621, you get a number that is far too low. Remember: mph to kph uses 1.609 (a number greater than 1), because kph values are larger than mph equivalents.
Meters per second (m/s) is a different unit. 60 mph = 26.8 m/s, not 96.6 kph. Make sure you are converting to the right target unit.
If you round 1.60934 to 1.6 before multiplying, you introduce a 0.6% error. At 70 mph, that is about 0.7 kph. Not dangerous for driving, but problematic for precision calculations or vehicle tuning.
US speedometers typically read 2-3% high. A car showing 70 mph is actually traveling about 68 mph (109.4 kph), not 112.7 kph. GPS speed is more accurate for real-world speed measurement.
Multiply by 1.60934. For quick estimates, multiply by 1.6. Example: 75 mph × 1.6 = 120 kph (actual: 120.7 kph).
60 mph equals 96.6 kph. This is the most common mph-to-kph conversion and a useful benchmark for highway driving speed comparisons.
70 mph equals 112.7 kph. This is the standard UK motorway speed limit. When driving in the UK, 70 on the speedometer is exactly the limit.
The US, UK, and Liberia use mph. The rest of the world uses kph. The UK officially switched to metric in 1970 but mph persists for road speeds.
30 mph equals 48.3 kph. In many US cities, 30 mph is the standard urban speed limit. Most metric countries use 50 kph for equivalent zones.
100 mph equals 160.9 kph. This is the recommended speed limit on portions of the German Autobahn and a benchmark for high-performance car reviews.
