Convert kilometers per hour to miles per hour with the formula, an extended speed limit reference table, and real-world driving context. Runs client-side.
KPH to MPH converts metric speed readings to imperial units used in the United States and United Kingdom. Multiply the kilometers per hour value by 0.621371 to get miles per hour. This conversion matters when driving abroad, reading international vehicle specifications, or comparing weather wind speeds across countries.
mph = kph × 0.621371
Worked example: converting 120 kph (standard European motorway speed):
For a quick mental estimate, multiply by 0.62. This gets you within about 0.5 mph for typical highway speeds.
| KPH | MPH | Context |
|---|---|---|
| 20 kph | 12.4 mph | Slow cycling pace |
| 30 kph | 18.6 mph | Fast cycling, city driving |
| 40 kph | 24.9 mph | Residential speed limit (most countries) |
| 50 kph | 31.1 mph | Urban speed limit (Europe, Asia) |
| 60 kph | 37.3 mph | Suburban road |
| 70 kph | 43.5 mph | Rural road speed |
| 80 kph | 49.7 mph | Country highway |
| 90 kph | 55.9 mph | Secondary highway |
| 100 kph | 62.1 mph | Highway speed, “going the speed limit” |
| 110 kph | 68.4 mph | Australian highway limit |
| 120 kph | 74.6 mph | European motorway limit |
| 130 kph | 80.8 mph | French autoroute limit |
| 140 kph | 87.0 mph | Italian autostrada limit |
| 150 kph | 93.2 mph | High-speed rail approach speed |
| 160 kph | 99.4 mph | German Autobahn recommended limit |
| 180 kph | 111.8 mph | Sports car cruising speed |
| 200 kph | 124.3 mph | Supercar territory |
| 250 kph | 155.3 mph | German Autobahn soft limit |
| 300 kph | 186.4 mph | High-speed train (TGV, Shinkansen) |
| 350 kph | 217.5 mph | Shanghai Maglev top speed |
| 400 kph | 248.5 mph | Formula 1 top speed |
If you are renting a car in France and see a sign showing 130, that is 80.8 mph. Without converting, you might drive at what feels like a comfortable 70 mph and be well under the limit, or unknowingly exceed it. Converting speed limits immediately when you cross a border prevents tickets.
Many cars display speed in both kph and mph on the dashboard, but not all. If your car shows only kph and you are driving in the US, you need to convert to know your actual speed. Driving at “100” on a kph speedometer means 62 mph.
A running pace of 10 kph means you complete a kilometer in 6 minutes. In mph, that is 6.21 mph, meaning a mile takes about 9 minutes 40 seconds. Converting helps you compare performance with runners using imperial units.
Wind speeds in international weather reports use kph. A storm with 120 kph winds has 74.6 mph gusts. US weather services report in mph, so converting helps you gauge storm severity from global forecasts.
European car specs list top speed in kph. A car with a 250 kph top speed goes 155 mph. If you are comparing vehicles across markets, converting lets you make apples-to-apples comparisons.
Multiplying by 1.609 converts mph to kph, not the other way. If you multiply kph by 1.609, you get a number that is way too high. Remember: kph to mph uses 0.621 (a number less than 1), because kph values are larger than their mph equivalents.
Car speedometers typically read 3-5% higher than actual speed. A car showing 100 kph might actually be traveling at 95-97 kph. Converting the speedometer reading gives you a number that is already inflated.
GPS-based speed is more accurate than your car’s speedometer. If your GPS shows 100 kph and your speedometer shows 103 kph, trust the GPS value when converting.
If you round 0.621371 to 0.6 before multiplying, you introduce a 3.4% error. At 100 kph, that is a 3.4 mph difference. Always multiply first, then round your result.
Multiply by 0.621371. For quick estimates, multiply by 0.62. Example: 110 kph × 0.62 = 68.2 mph (actual: 68.4 mph).
100 kph equals 62.1 mph. This is the most common kph-to-mph conversion and the benchmark for highway driving speed comparisons.
120 kph equals 74.6 mph. This is the standard motorway speed limit in countries like Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands.
The US, UK, and Liberia use mph for road speeds. The rest of the world uses kph. The UK officially switched in 1970 but many British drivers still think in mph.
110 kph equals 68.4 mph. Common in Australia, parts of Asia, and as a suggested highway speed on some European roads.
Within 0.2 mph for speeds between 50 and 150 kph. At 100 kph, the estimate gives 62.0 mph versus the precise 62.14 mph. Fine for driving, not for precision engineering.
