Convert kilometers to miles

Enter a distance in kilometers to get the mile equivalent. The conversion factor is approximately 0.621. Most countries use kilometers for road distances. The US and UK use miles.

Conversion formula

The exact formula:

miles = kilometers × 0.621371

Quick estimate (multiply by 0.6):

miles ≈ kilometers × 0.6

Worked example: converting a half marathon distance to miles.

A half marathon is 21.1 km. To convert:

21.1 × 0.621371 = 13.11 miles

So a half marathon is 13.1 miles. For 42.195 km (full marathon): 42.195 × 0.621371 = 26.22 miles.

Real-world use cases

Running races

Running distances are standardized in kilometers worldwide. A 5K is 3.1 miles, a 10K is 6.2 miles, and a marathon is 42.2 km or 26.2 miles. Runners in the US often follow plans written in miles, so they convert race distances to match their pacing and training schedules.

Road distances and GPS navigation

Google Maps and most GPS systems let you switch between km and miles, but some countries show both. In the UK, motorway signs show miles while local distances may appear in km on maps. If a route mixes units, convert between them to avoid missed turns.

Fuel economy

European cars rate fuel consumption in liters per 100 km (L/100km). US cars use miles per gallon (mpg). These conversions work inversely. A car that uses 7 L/100km gets about 33.6 mpg. A car that uses 10 L/100km gets about 23.5 mpg. The conversion is not a simple ratio.

Travel planning

If you plan a trip between countries that use different units, you need to convert distances to estimate travel time and fuel costs. A 300 km drive in Europe is about 186 miles. At highway speeds, that is roughly 3 hours. Knowing the conversion helps compare travel options across borders.

Gotchas

The “multiply by 0.6” shortcut gives results about 3.4% too low. At 500 km, the shortcut gives 300 miles while the correct answer is 310.7 miles. A 10 mile difference matters for fuel planning on long drives.

Kilometers and miles are not interchangeable at face value. A speed limit of 100 km/h looks similar to 100 mph, but 100 km/h is only 62 mph. Mixing up units while driving in a foreign country can lead to dangerous speeding or unintentionally slow driving.

Running pace conversion is not linear. A 5 min/km pace is about 8:03 min/mile, not 5 min/mile. To convert pace: divide minutes per km by 1.609344 to get minutes per mile, or multiply minutes per mile by 1.609344 to get minutes per km.
