Indian Passport Photo Requirements
Indian passport photos follow the 2x2 inch (51x51mm) standard, matching US passport dimensions. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) requires a plain white background, a front-facing pose with a neutral expression, and both eyes open. The same specifications apply to regular passports, diplomatic passports, and OCI cards.
Background and Lighting
The background must be plain white with no shadows, patterns, or visible objects. Even lighting across the face is essential. Avoid direct flash, which creates harsh shadows behind your head. Natural window light or two soft light sources positioned at 45 degrees give the most even results. This tool removes whatever background your photo has and replaces it with white.
Face Proportions
The face from chin to top of head should measure 50 to 69 percent of the total image height. This matches the US standard. Position your face in the center of the frame. The blue guide lines show the acceptable zone for your head height.
Passport Seva Online Portal
For online applications through passportindia.gov.in, upload a JPEG between 10KB and 300KB, at least 350x350 pixels. The tool generates 600x600px images that work for both digital submission and printing. For walk-in appointments at Passport Seva Kendras, bring two printed photos.
Visa Applications
Indian visa applications for other countries may require different photo sizes. Check the specific consulate requirements before printing. This tool supports multiple country formats. Switch to the correct country in the dropdown if you need a different size for a visa application.
