Generate time ordered UUID v7 identifiers online. Sortable by creation time, RFC 9562 compliant, ideal for database keys and event streams.
UUID version 7 pairs a 48 bit millisecond timestamp with 74 bits of randomness in the familiar 8-4-4-4-12 format. The result sorts by creation time with plain string comparison while keeping 74 bits of uniqueness per millisecond. It is the IETF recommended UUID for database keys, event streams, and distributed systems that need order without coordination.
| Bits | Field | Content |
|---|---|---|
| 48 | unix_ts_ms | Unix timestamp in milliseconds |
| 4 | ver | always 0111 (7) |
| 12 | rand_a | random or monotonic counter |
| 2 | var | always 10 (variant) |
| 62 | rand_b | random |
Read the first 12 hex digits as one integer to recover the timestamp. The third group starts with 7, marking the version.
Postgres 18 ships uuidv7() natively. On older versions use the pg_uuidv7 extension or generate in the app layer. For MySQL and SQLite, store as CHAR(36) or BLOB(16) and generate client side. Keep an explicit created_at column anyway: the embedded timestamp records ID generation, not business event time, and clocks can skew.
For opaque tokens use the UUID v4 Generator instead, and read the full v4 vs v7 comparison before choosing.
