Convert centimeters to inches with exact formula, conversion table up to 200 cm, and real-world references for screens, clothing, and height.
Enter a length in centimeters and get the inch equivalent. The conversion factor is 0.3937. Centimeters belong to the metric system. Inches are the standard unit in the US and UK for screens and clothing.
The exact formula:
inches = centimeters × 0.393701
Or equivalently:
inches = centimeters ÷ 2.54
Worked example: converting 170 cm to inches.
170 ÷ 2.54 = 66.93 inches
To express as feet and inches: 66.93 ÷ 12 = 5 feet, remainder 6.93 inches. So 170 cm is approximately 5 feet 7 inches.

TV and monitor manufacturers advertise diagonal screen size in inches, even in metric countries. A 55 inch TV has a diagonal of about 140 cm. A 24 inch monitor is about 61 cm across the diagonal. When shopping for screens in a country that lists centimeters, divide by 2.54 to get the inch value.
European clothing sizes use centimeters for body measurements, while US and UK sizes use inches. A chest measurement of 100 cm is about 39.4 inches. A waist of 80 cm is about 31.5 inches. Many online sizing charts include both units, but if you only see cm, divide by 2.54 to cross-reference.
Most of the world reports height in centimeters. In the US and UK, height is expressed in feet and inches. To convert: divide the cm value by 2.54 to get total inches, then divide by 12 for feet. For example, 165 cm = 64.96 inches = 5 feet 5 inches.
IKEA and European furniture manufacturers list dimensions in cm. A bookshelf that is 80 cm wide is about 31.5 inches. A doorway at 200 cm tall is about 78.7 inches, or 6 feet 7 inches. Construction materials like lumber, drywall, and tile are often sold in metric dimensions outside the US.
Rounding errors compound when you chain conversions. If you convert cm to inches and then inches to cm, you might not get the original number back due to intermediate rounding. Always use the full precision (2.54 exactly) for chained conversions.
The shorthand “divide by 2.5” gives results about 1.6% too high. For example, 100 cm ÷ 2.5 = 40 inches, but the correct answer is 39.37 inches. Fine for mental estimates, wrong for woodworking or engineering.
Screen diagonal does not tell you width or height. A 24 inch monitor (61 cm diagonal) is about 53 cm wide and 30 cm tall in a 16:9 aspect ratio. You need to account for aspect ratio when comparing screen dimensions.
