UK Passport Photo Requirements
UK passport photos must measure 35x45mm, the standard format used across most of Europe. HMPO (His Majesty’s Passport Office) requires a plain light grey or cream background, a neutral expression with mouth closed, and both eyes clearly visible. Photos must be taken within the last month for passport applications.
Background Rules
The UK is specific about background color. Light grey is preferred over pure white because it provides better contrast for facial recognition systems. Avoid strong directional lighting that creates shadows behind your head. This tool automatically replaces your background with the correct light grey tone.
Head Positioning
The head from chin to crown should measure between 29mm and 34mm in the printed photo, which is roughly 60 to 70 percent of the 45mm height. Position yourself centered in the frame with roughly equal space on each side.
Online vs Printed Applications
For online passport renewal, HMPO accepts digital photos uploaded through GOV.UK. The system checks the photo against biometric requirements automatically. For paper applications, you need two identical printed photos. Download the print sheet from this tool and cut to size.
Children and Infants
Babies and young children follow the same 35x45mm format. The child must be photographed alone with no other person visible. For infants, lay them on a plain light grey sheet and photograph from above. Head size rules are relaxed for children under six.
