EU and Schengen Passport Photo Standard
The 35x45mm format is the most widely used passport photo size in the world. It serves as the standard for all EU member states, Schengen zone countries, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and South Korea. Biometric requirements introduced in 2005 mean the photo must work with automated facial recognition systems.
Country-Specific Background Variations
While the dimensions are consistent, background color requirements vary by country. Germany specifically requires light grey. France accepts light blue or light grey. Most other EU countries accept plain white. When in doubt, white is the safest choice and is accepted almost everywhere. This tool uses white by default.
Biometric Requirements
EU biometric standards require a front-facing pose with a neutral expression. Both eyes must be open and clearly visible. The head from chin to crown should be 70 to 80 percent of the image height. No glasses, no head coverings (except for documented religious reasons), and no shadows on the face or background.
Schengen Visa Applications
Schengen visa applications require one or two 35x45mm photos depending on the consulate. The photo must be recent (taken within the last three to six months, depending on the country). Some consulates are strict about the photo being identical to what their system captures during the biometric enrollment appointment.
Digital vs Print
Most EU countries now accept digital photo uploads for online applications. The typical requirement is a JPEG of at least 413x531 pixels. For embassy or consulate appointments, bring two printed copies on glossy photo paper. The print sheet from this tool tiles photos onto a 4x6 inch layout ready for any photo printer.
