Canadian Passport Photo Requirements
Canada uses a 50x70mm photo format, larger than most countries. IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) requires a plain white background, a neutral expression with mouth closed, and the photo taken within the last 12 months. The same format applies to citizenship certificates and permanent resident cards.
Unique Dimensions
At 50x70mm (591x827 pixels at 300 DPI), Canadian passport photos are taller and wider than the 35x45mm international standard. This gives more space for biometric processing and accommodates the guarantor endorsement area on the back of printed photos. Do not submit photos in US or EU sizes.
Head Size Rules
The head from chin to crown must measure between 31mm and 36mm in the printed photo, which is roughly 45 to 55 percent of the total height. This is a smaller proportion than US or EU requirements, meaning more background is visible around the head. The blue guide lines in this tool show the correct zone.
Guarantor Requirements
For first-time adult and child passport applications, one photo must be endorsed on the back by a guarantor. The guarantor signs and writes a statement certifying your identity. They must be a Canadian passport holder who has known you for at least two years. Renewal applications do not require a guarantor.
Printing
Download the print sheet to get photos tiled on a 4x6 inch layout. Due to the larger 50x70mm size, fewer photos fit per sheet compared to US or EU formats. Print on high-quality glossy photo paper and cut along the guide lines.
